Mission statement

Welcome to Investigating Ardwick, published by Ellie Swindale, resident and student in Manchester. This locally-driven news website will investigate important issues and celebrate community events. My goal is to highlight the historical achievements, providing important information to the Ardwick community, and voice the issues that need to be discussed.

Patch description

In the area nearest both universities in the Ardwick patch, unsurprisingly, 38.7% of people are aged 16-24 years old. Most of these buildings are student accommodation. In a small area, again near university, 39.8% of people have foreign qualifications, accounting for the many international students who live in Manchester. However, there are small areas where 41.9% have no qualifications. This could be due to unoccupied housing or international occupants there have not declared their qualifications.

There are two community groups I found on Facebook, one being a general community group of nearby patches, and the other a football consortium. As football is very popular in Manchester, such community groups are not uncommon. Two recent stories in Ardwick involved two separate occasions in which a car flipped during a crash and the celebration of Ardwick born mountaineer Joe Brown, as he sadly died aged 89.

Key upcoming events

Due to Coronavirus all events have been cancelled/postponed for the foreseeable future but events that were meant to happen are:

  • Jimmy Carr’s terribly funny tour at the o2 Apollo
  • A film summer school at St Thomas Centre
  • A holistic festival of yoga at Victoria Bath’s

Three potential stories I will cover

  • Activities community groups at The Brunswick Parish Church
  • The history of Victoria Bath’s and how it has evolved over time
  • Data story on the rise of mental health illness during the pandemic
